Keeping Our History Alive
Summer, 2023, is winding down in Willoughby and the Willoughby Historical Society is involved in many of late season and autumn activities:
-
On August 12 we participated in the Last Stop Willoughby Parade and our float honoring local inventor float Garrett Morgan won first place! We were very happy to have two of his grandchildren, Sandra Morgan and Garrett Morgan III join us in the parade.
-
Our Rebuild the Clock Tower project has hosted informational booths at the Cruise-In in June and the Saturday Farmers Market
-
We helped to welcome the Great Ohio Bike Adventure bicyclists for their overnight stay
-
We hosted a successful Scavenger Hunt in Downtown Willoughby on June 24.
September 9 we will host a tour of the Sharpe Avenue Cemetery featuring some of the Outstanding Women of Willoughby who helped to build our city into the great place it is today.
In October we will be hosting tours of the Louis Penfield House. Although the tours are sold out you can still get on a waiting list at EventBrite.com. Raffle tickets to win a two-night stay are available at It's Wright in Willoughby Hills Ohio Louis Penfield House IMMERSIVE WRIGHT
We are actively growing following the slowdown during the pandemic and hope you will join us as we explore and rediscover all of Willoughby's history from the Lake Erie shore to our Historic Downtown, the Chagrin River, and beyond!
Membership is free and open to all! Simply email us at willoughby.historical@gmail.com and we will add you as a member.
We welcome volunteers at all levels whether you would like to chair a committee or simply help out the day of an event. We are also always seeking suggestions for new projects and activities.
We meet the third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. - usually at Chesbrough House (formerly Citizens Bank - and May through October we can also be found at the Willoughby Outdoor Market (our booth is next to the United Methodist Church).
Last but not least, we are always on a search for Willoughby photos and artifacts so when your looking through your memorabilia and find something of interest please let us know and we will add it to our collection. (If you don't want to part with an item we will photograph it for you.)
Thank you for helping us keep Willoughby history alive!
